How to Find a Nueces County Inmate

The Sheriff's Office did not publish an open, searchable Nueces County jail roster in its official pages. To confirm whether a person is in custody, call the jail at (361) 887-2222 or visit the Sheriff's Office at 901 Leopard Street. Have a full legal name, a date of birth, and any booking number or arrest date ready. The jail operates 24 hours a day.

For sentenced state prisoners, use the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. For federal inmates, use the Bureau of Prisons. Each tool covers a different group, and the right one depends on where the case ended up.

  1. Decide whether the person is in the Nueces County Jail, a TDCJ unit, federal BOP custody, or a different county or city.
  2. For county jail, call (361) 887-2222 with a full name and date of birth.
  3. For state prison, search TDCJ by name or TDCJ number.
  4. For federal custody, search the BOP locator by number or name.
  5. For custody alerts, sign up for VINELink to get notice when status changes.

Booking and Bond in Nueces County

Booking is the intake process at the jail. After an arrest, a deputy or officer brings the person to the jail for identification, fingerprints, a booking photo, a property inventory, and a basic medical and mental-health screening. Charges and any holds or warrants from other agencies are checked at the same time.

Texas law generally requires a prompt magistrate appearance after an arrest. The magistrate reads the charges, explains the right to counsel, and sets bond. Bond can be cash, a surety bond posted by a bondsman, or a personal bond based on a promise to appear. Some charges carry no bond until a judge rules. Once bond is set, the family can post it through the proper window or a licensed bondsman.

Classification then assigns housing based on security level, medical and mental-health needs, separation requirements, and facility capacity.

You can also send funds by phone, online through AccessCorrections, or by mail with a money order or cashier's check. Personal checks are not accepted. The deposit cap is $300 per transaction.

For mail deposits, make the money order or cashier's check payable to "Inmate Trust Fund" care of the inmate. Include the inmate's date of birth and Nueces SID number, not the state SID. The county warns to use black or blue pen only, and to skip metallic, glitter, or other gel pens. Funds, checks, and money orders are not accepted through the Jail Information Booth, at the McKinzie Jail Annex window, or during visitation hours.

Searching for Texas State Inmates

A Nueces County resident sentenced to prison goes to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, not the county jail. TDCJ keeps an online inmate lookup that supports name and ID searches. The screenshot is from the official TDCJ offender information page, which lists the online tool plus email and phone lookup methods.

TDCJ profiles can show name, TDCJ and SID numbers, race, gender, age, current unit, offense and county of conviction, court and cause number, and parole eligibility.

Federal Inmates and BOP

Federal cases route through the Bureau of Prisons. A Nueces County resident convicted in federal court ends up in a BOP facility, not the county jail or a TDCJ unit. The BOP inmate locator works by register number, DCDC, FBI, or INS number, or by name with race, age, and sex filters. Federal pretrial detention may use county jails on contract, but BOP custody itself is federal.

For release dates, notifications, and reentry resources for state and federal inmates with Nueces County ties, see the released inmates page.

Mail, Phone, and Attorney Visits

Nueces County does not publish a full set of mail, phone, and attorney visit rules on its public pages, so confirm current rules with the Sheriff's Office before you send anything. General Texas county jail practice expects plain mail, no contraband, and pre-approved attorney visits during posted hours.

Administrative Segregation visits continue to use attorney booths after the recent visitation update. For booking-related questions, the Sheriff's Office is at (361) 887-2222.
